Goonies Never Say Die (Second half of the story)

Goonies 2: Never Say Die! part

Ok, while coming down from the emotional roller coaster that was the season 2 finale episode of Hannibal.....mmmm so shiny...so spooky...more please

I found myself struck with the oddest of choices for an image for my mind to take hold on to:Mikey Walsh standing on the bow of Brands ship sailing forward towards adventure.

When we last left our Goonies, they had just "opened" a treasure chest ,discovering a skull, with a map clenched between its jaws and a pirate's periscope rammed in its left eye. There is more to One Eyed Willies treasure. You don't think he hid everything in one place?

Upon closer inspection the Goonies discover that the map leads to a location of a small island. Now this island exists only in the Goonie 'verse, and can not be found on any modern map. So , put those suspenders on that disbelief.

So the gang sets sail for treasure island. Here I'm picturing a ship similar to the boat owned by Quint in Jaws, you know , for a nice nudge nudge wink wink.  Mikey stands at the front, pirate hat planted on his head, smile stuck on his face. Somewhere in the back, Mouth is tossing his internal chum overboard.

Not far behind , the Fratelli's are following in their own boat. Her Captain ,ready for revenge. They have been keeping an eye on the gang ,listening in and waiting to steal the rich stuff. At one point Data would spot them with his "Binoculars of Boosting", and as the Fratellis boat closes the distance there is a bit of a battle as the Fratellis shoot at the Goonies, and the Goonies throw everything, including the boats kitchen sink at their attackers. The Goonies manage to cause just enough damage to the Fratellis boat to give them some time to get away, but not too far. Brand tries to call Harbor patrol for help, but the only response is static, so they have no way of knowing if the message got through.

Once the Goonies reach the island the race is on to solve the riddles and find the location of the buried treasure before trouble arrives. I imagine the periscope would be of some puzzle solving use, most likely with scratches on the glass that might be easily be regarded as damage from time, that when placed on the right rock would line up to the next location.

One of the Goonies, Andy, perhaps? remains on the boat and continues to try and call for help.

At some point in this part of the adventure, One Eyed Willie should play on the expectation of X marks the spot.
Once they find the treasures location, the Goonies load up their pockets as fast as they can. But , unfortunately for them ,the treasure would be kept in such a trap that in order to even see it, the hunter would have to seal themselves in the cave. The door to the treasure only opening when the entrance to the cave is closed.  A weight and pully system.I  would love for the way for the final puzzle to be solved is that someone has to remain behind. That there is no way to get around this. A lone skeleton corpse punctuating the puzzle.
Even though the door can be opened from the outside, they unfortunately fail to leave someone outside at the switch.
Something else about the puzzle should be time sensitive, that the treasure hunter has to act fast, and make a quick decision or die. Im picturing a hourglass made out of two skulls. the sand sifting between the mouth and eye sockets back and fourth.

Just as they solve the puzzle,An argument occurs when Mikey offers, and insists to stay. He Goonishly reasons that his days are already numbered due to his cancer and this way the rest of the Goonies can live happily on the gold.He asks Brand to take care of his kid "Willie". Raise him with "Andy" as their own child.Tell "Willie" he loves him etc etc.  The clock keeps ticking and a choice has to be made to get out of there quickly .But no one is willing to accept this choice. Goonies Never Say Die! and almost in unison they Goonies begin to speak the pledge:

"I will never betray my goon dock friends,
We will stick together until the whole world ends,
Through heaven and hell, and nuclear war,
Good pals like us, will stick like tar,
In the city, or the country, or the forest, or the boonies,
I am proudly declared a fellow Goonie!”

And just as they resign themselves to their fate, the door opens and its the  Fratellis, armed and very dangerous.  Data temporarily distracts them with one of his inventions, a bright light flash. (side note, at least one of his inventions from the previous movie should make a reappearance, and actually work this time) The Goonies make a break for it and push their way out the entrance, two of the three Fratellis following suit,  but Mikey, being furthest from the door, gets trapped inside with the Lady Fratelli whom we first met as the mysterious  fake"Chester Copperpot "relative .

She is an angry lass. She wants revenge for what they did to Agatha "Mama" Fratelli, her sister. Maybe even Sloth was her child, not Mama's? And when Sloth went to live with Chunk, she never got to see him again as she was a wanted woman and if she showed her face she could have been arrested and sent to jail for her many crimes.

She picks up a sword, Mikey does as well, and the two have a sword fight. Somewhere in the fight , Mikey gets one of his eyes cut.
Mikey manages to move her around the room and position her on the puzzles trigger to open the door. He quickly makes his exit , but before she can reach the door she is trapped inside.

Outside, Brand and the other Goonies have made a break for it , chased by the two other Fratellis. Mikey hears gunfire in the distance and runs toward the beach, fearing the worst.
Just as he breaks from the forests edge he is greeted by his now one eyed sight of several ships of the harbor patrol holding the Fratellis at bay. The baddies are arrested and our heroes celebrate surviving another day.

Cut to :  scenes of our Goonies in a happier place, bills payed, relationships rekindled.
And as our story winds down, we hear Mikey Walsh ,once again telling his son a bedtime story. The camera tracks down a hallway, lined with frames of pictures of the original cave, the new treasure island , newspaper clippings, town celebrating the Goonies: telling us visually some of the events that happened off screen after the Goonies were rescued. As the camera moves into a doorway of Willies bedroom we see the back of Mikey Walsh, sittin on Willies bed. Willie is rapt with attention as Mikey is telling the story of his most recent adventure, ( a story Willie surely has demanded his Dad tell him every night before bed) and as the camera pans around Mikey, and Mikey is coming to his last line,  we stop on his face: He is wearing an eye patch much like One Eyed Willies, and he is smiling, once again happy for whatever the future may bring.

And as we fade to black....we hear the Goonies theme one last time,....and Willie say" Tell it again Dad"

Goonies Never Say Die !

Goonies 2: Never Say Die!

So, while reading and listening to music tonight, I was suddenly surprised to hear the score tracks from Goonies come on the players rotation. And with that my mind started to wander to the recent talk of an actual sequel possibly becoming a real thing.
The most likely of possibilities is that the studio will want to make a movie that would appeal to a younger audience with a whole new group of kids as the main players with the original actors making token cameo appearances. Me, I wish they would forgo that obvious set up and stick with the original gang. Who really wants to see the children of the original Goonies go on a different adventure? We want our gang. Not have to spend half a movie intro-ing their kids who happen to share similar personality traits as the original bunch. We want our Goonies, going for the gold once more. Older, maybe a bit wiser, but just as desperate to succeed.
So my mind,as is want to do, it started wandering....and this is what it stepped in......my first blush, dont look back, randomness idea of a sequel:

Goonies 2 :
NEVER SAY DIE !

The movie opens with a portrayal of the tale of One Eyed Willie and how he got trapped in the cavern. We should come in on the real juicy part of the action, a real exciting mid sentence moment part of the story.
Pirates, ships and explosions. Oh My !We get to see him in action as told via the voice over of one Mikey Walsh. Who is telling his kid a bed time story much like his father did when Mikey was a child. No surpirse, Mikey has named his boy William, and affectionately calls him "Willie" . Willie is young , too young to go on an adventure like his Dad .
Dad continues to tell the story until Willie interrupts like a needle knocked off a record and ask that one nagging question: if one eyed will killed his crew, who escaped with the map and keys to the treasure? Mikey explains what he believes happened. That One eyed Willie and crew used their tunnels to reach the surface and get supplies to repair the Inferno, but to protect themselves and the treasure he designed the booby traps. Eventually, after many setbacks ,and after another cave in that traps them again, the excessive time locked in the cavern is too much, and he goes paranoid crazy and kills his crew. But someone escaped.

Once again, times are tough in the Walsh home. And with the rest of the Goonies

For you see, Mikey Walsh has cancer. The medical bills are piling up, and having to take a break due to health issues , from his job as a history teacher at Astoria High, he is having trouble keeping up with the bills. The original money from the first one eyed willie adventure may have been enough to save the Goon Docks once, but it didnt last.
Mouth is still mouthing off, and has had trouble keeping jobs as a plumber. Separated from Stef, his home life is in an unhappy state .
Brand and Andy are running some type of fishing service while he also assists with harbor patrol. She mans the office, he sails the boat, a boat that is in constant need of repair. She is not happy with what has become her life.Unbeknownst to her, Brand has been searching for One eyed Willies ship which is believed to have sank somewhere beyond the horizon.
Data, no surprise , works with computers, but his eccentric behavior ,has kept him more in data entry then creating.though his home is full of wall to wall works in progress. His look would make one think of Doc Brown.
Chunk, the only one who is actually doing well, has become a reasonably successful author , his most famous book is the recounting of the Goonies first adventure that he wrote years later. With much embellishment. So much so that everyone involved with the original story has become the butt of jokes and ridicule in their hometown. And despite witness to the contrary, fewer and fewer people believe the story of the kids and their pirate ship.the ship sailed off beyond the horizon , and supposedly promptly sank from old age.Lost at sea once more

While the Goonies tried to stay together, time eventually did separate them . Until one stormy evening when Mikey receives a phone call from someone who claims to be a distant relative of one Chester Copperpot.

The voice on the phone instructs Mikey to meet her immediately , as she claims to have found something in Copperpots personal effects that has something important to do with the legend of one eyed willie. And he is to bring the "key" and the "map". Mikey, having dealt with shady, collectible seekers, and not really in the mood or position to play in the past, initially refuses, until the voice on the phone threatens to sue Mikey for stealing from his distant cousins corpse. Since Mikey, openly had admitted to doing this in newspaper interviews back then, he cant deny it.

Mikey ,reluctantly agrees. Now,what if the Chester Copperpot relative is actually a Fratelli in disguise? She has the doubloon and wants the map and key. In a scuffle, Mikey gets it back, but not without almost getting shot.

Returning home, Mikey, sits in his study.A phone call comes through. Someone has died.

Sloth.....or perhaps Chunk...or both.

Days later, after the funeral, at Mikeys house,
The old gang halfheartedly play catch up,having not done this much in the previous years. Each looking at the map,the key, recalling memories and arguments soon break out.Eventually Everyone shouts" Shut up, Mouth!".But Mikey pours cold water on the anger by revealing to all that he has cancer, and its bad. Everyone is shocked, even Brand had not known.

Data wishes one eyed Willie would save them one more time with the rich stuff.

To break the tension, Mouth has folded the map into a paper airplane and tosses it in front of everyone . Mikey, picks up the map, and while chiding Mouth for never growing up and possibly ruining the map, stops short, as he spots something on the paper. Something that in all his years of staring at the map ,which he kept in a frame in his study at home , he never had noticed.

There was an additional riddle, one that was only seen when folded along secondary folds in the map.

This must be what the Fratelli woman wanted the map for. Perhaps she saw something in a old newspaper photo of the kids holding the map (hmm will have to check to see it they made it out of the cave with the map, or if it was in the hands of one of the Fratellis in the end)

Mouth tries to translate , but his school spanish has become even rustier over the years. So Stef saves the day, and working together they translate the riddle. : Coppers bones, Southern foams, treasures home

There is more treasure to be had.

Mikey believes its hidden behind one of the large waterfalls in the original cavern. Maybe in a tunnel that leads to under where the ship had rested.

But not everyone is eager to go on another adventure. First, the only way back into the cavern is via the ocean and its rough waters. They would need Brands unreliable boat and hes not offering. Second, they have adult problems now and playtime is over.

However, Mikey knows of another way. For years he has been going back to the cavern. Years ago he found an opening that lead back in and he would return many times and just sit in the dark, remembering. He never ventured far , as it was now dark and unstable and he really had no reason to go further inside. Until now.

Everyone discourages the idea of going back, on just a little piece of information and speculation ,so they each depart for their homes.

The next morning , Mikey is surprised to be greeted by Chunk,Data and Mouth, all who have gathered gear that would help them in their quest, this time better prepared with more than just Datas dastardly devices and luck.

And the adventure begins.....again

they work their way back into the cavern. light some candles,or other form of lightsource and cross the water on a series of fallen rocks. and with held breath ....step behind the waterfall........and promptly smack their heads on a rock.

closer inspection finds a partial cave in has occured, but Mikey was right and behind the falling water is another puzzle.

This puzzle required the use of both items from the first movie, the skull key AND the doubloon

Before they can solve the puzzle, they are greeted by a bright light that washes over the cavern, exciting bats in their belfries and illuminating falling rocks. the approach is threatening, could it be the Fratellis?

Sure enough, its Brand chasing after his little brother one more time to bring him home before he gets himself in trouble. On the boat with him is Andy and Stef.

Using both items , the doubloon fitting in a skull pattern like an eye patch. The skull key , like an earring. they open a panel like a safe to find a treasure chest waiting . The chest has a puzzle lock on it, but with the faintest of clue to solve it, Brand decides to chop it open with an ax he has on his boat. Revealing a skull with a map in its mouth and a pirates telescope rammed in its left eye.

and thats about as far as I got before my eyes grew tired of staring at the screen........
